How to express by hand

This is a skill which some mothers master more easily than others, but it is relatively easy once you know how to do it. If you find it difficult, ask your midwife to show you.

Stimulate your let-down reflex by gently stroking your breast from the top down towards your nipple.

After about 10 strokes you can start squeezing the areola well behind your nipple (using your thumb and first finger), squeezing and releasing alternately until drops of milk appear on your nipple.

Lean slightly forward and continue squeezing and releasing, allowing the milk to squirt or drip into a sterile container.

Swap breasts when the milk flow slows down.

Carry on doing this until you have expressed enough milk for your needs or until your breasts are empty.
